Gobble the Goodie: Fall Counting Freebie

I am linking up with some amazing friends to bring you another month of fun ideas, freebies and giveaways!

It is fall time and I absolutely love everything about the fall, cool weather, hoodies, and all of the fall seasons. However, it's not feeling much like fall here in the Midwest. We are still in the 70s almost everyday. But I will take the warm weather over the snow and ice so let it last as long as it can!

By this time of the school year, the kids are getting a good understand of numbers and counting. Now is the time that we go more in depth with teaching numbers and what each number truly means. We have practiced counting many different ways and I am so proud of how quick they are catching on and how quick they are learning to count and their numbers!

We practiced representing each number using stickers to count. This is a great way to begin teaching that each number in sequence is one more than the previous number. And the kids love adding stickers to their number board!

We also love these counting puzzles from From the Pond. The kids count out the strips then have to glue them in the correct number order to make a picture.

Our number strip puzzles from Christina Mauro are very similar where the kids put the strips in the correct number order. They love doing these when they finish their work early!

Julie Lee also has this amazing counting activity. The kids read the number then count out the correct number of apples to glue to their tree.

I think this was my kids absolute favorite counting activity from The Printable Princess. They made the number out of play dough then had to show the number on the ten frame.  Once they finished the play dough numbers, they had to practice writing the number also.

One of our favorite games was this supper simple game called Mix and Fix. We started out with number cards 0-5. The kids had to put the number cards in order. Then I would call "Mix" and the students mixed them back up. When I called "Fix," the students had to put them back in the correct order as quick as they could. Such a fun way to teach number order.

Anything with food is always a hit. We used candy corn to practice counting and representing different numbers.

Now that we have a good foundation of counting. We are moving on to breaking numbers apart and putting numbers together. This can be a more difficult task so hands on exploration is a great way to teach these concepts.

We start out teaching this concept by just introducing the concept of one more. One way I teach this is by having the students make a tower for the number card they picked. Then they build the same tower but this time they put one more cube on the tower and count how many cubes are in the new tower.

We then move on to putting numbers together. These plate dividers are great for teaching this skill. The students roll a dice and put that many cubes in the first divider. Then they roll the dice again and put that many cubes in the second divider. Then they will put all of the cubes in the big section and build a tower and count how many cubes they have all together.

We then move on to different ways to represent each number. This is a great way to teach number combinations from The Printable Princess. The students put 5 red/yellow counters in a cup, shake the cup of counters, then spill the counters onto the table. They record how many reds and how many yellows they spilled out.

Once we have mastered the shake, spill, record, it is time for the students to create their own number combinations. Students color the pictures in this little flip book to show different number combinations. Then they record the number combination they found.

August Pinterest Pick 3

Hey! I'm back and linking up with some amazing bloggers for this month's edition of Pinterest Pick 3!

I cannot believe that summer is over! I started back to trainings last week and kids start back on Auguest 15th. When do you start back? This month I am bringing you some activities that you can do the first week of school to help you get back into the school mode.

Ideas for Using Chrysanthemum on the First Day of School {FREEBIE} - First Grade Blue Skies:

I absolutely love reading Chrysanthemum during the first week of school. It is a great way to talk about each others names and also how we should treat each other. So many great concepts to go over the first week in the story. First Grade Blue Skies has so many great activities to go with this book! You could use this book for the entire week with all of her wonderful activities!

week2s:

One big focus in Kindergarten is learning their name. They have to learn to recognize it, write it, and spell it. Cara Carroll has a page filled with so many amazing ideas to use to teach students their name. These are all fun, engaging, and interactive ways to teach their name. I am so excited to use many of these activities during the first week of school!

Blog Hoppin': Back to School: Establishing Classroom Community:

One thing I want to focus more on this school year is building a classroom community. One thing I plan to implement this year is a morning meeting time to help start our day off right and with the sense of community and belonging. I also love this banner idea. Have the students come up with a few simple rules and let the students decorate the banners to hang in the classroom so they can take ownership over the rules. Definitely going to try and do this during the first week of school!

I’m linking up up with some blogging friends, Ashley at Just ReedLisa at Pawsitively Teaching and Marissa at Inspired Owl’s Corner for the monthly Pinterest Pick 3 Party! Look for more great ideas below. Now head on over and check out some more amazing pins to use this month!

Summer Reading Stash: Classics

I cannot believe this is our last week of our Reading Stash Hop. I have been having a great time sharing some amazing books with you this summer and I hope that you have found lots of books to add to your classroom library. This week we are bringing you some classics. I absolutely love teaching with classics. There is so much good literature and sometimes we skip over the classics for the newest books. But let's take a look at some amazing classics!

1. The Giving Tree

This was one of my favorite books growing up. I think I had it memorized by 1st grade. It is still one of my favorite books to this day. And who can honestly say that they can read this book without tearing up at the end? I don't think I could. This book has so many concepts that you can teaching about caring and compassion and helping others. Great book to read at the beginning of school or during a morning meeting! I found this cute idea and absolutely love it! I think I want to make a big tree for our classroom about things that we can give to each other! Love this! Click the picture for more details.

2. Stone Soup

I love reading this story around Thanksgiving time. We discuss our nutrition unit around Thanksgiving and I always add this story in to the unit. Before we read the story, we talk about our favorite soups and waht ingredients they have in them. Then we read Stone Soup and we make our own soup together as a class. I found this cute craft and may have to add this to my lesson too. Check it out below!

3. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

This is such a fun story to teach about the letters. It's a fun rhyme and the kids catch on quick and you will hear them reciting the story over and over. At the beginning of the school year, we learn one letter a day in an ABC Bootcamp. After we have learned all 26 letters, we have a big Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Day and celebrate learning all of our letters. We make these adorable Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees for a snack and these cute hats to wear. This is a day that I love doing and such a fun way to celebrate all that the students have learned!

4. Danny the Dinosaur

This was my husband's favorite book growing up so I am actually going to turn this part over to him. Now this is his first blog post so go easy on him :)

Hello internet.  Julie asked me to pick the classic kindergarten book that I loved most and I couldn't not pick this classic that share my dad and my first name.  I probably read it 500 times between my 1st and 5th grade years because it captured my imagination about living literally larger than life.  I bet at least half of your kinders want a friendly dinosaur to walk them home every day..

Thanks babe! I think he is a keeper :) My kids love learning about Dinosaurs! It's probably one of their favorite topics all year! There are so many things that we do with Dinosaurs but I'll try to pick our favorite. We love measuring dinosaur feet and seeing how big dinosaurs were. Check it out below.

5. The Snowy Day

I love reading this story when we have our first snowfall. We do not get snow that often so when we do it is a very big deal! This story is about a boy who goes outside in the snow and does different activities in the snow. We always talk about things that we like to do in the snow and compare what we like to do in the snow to things that Peter likes to do in the snow. After we make our list, we make this cute Peter craft and put our text to self connection at the bottom. This idea came from Deanna Jump.

I hope you have found some great books during our summer hop. Now head on over to Just Add Students for some more great classics!
